The face of the MaxumStone big block retaining wall is only 5’ from the property line so it was originally specified as cast in place concrete since segmental block with geogrid reinforcing could not be used. MaxumStone with concrete extenders was offered to the general contractor as a value engineering alternative since it could be built within the constraints of the site. MaxumStone blocks with 2’ concrete extenders were used to construct the wall. The maximum total wall height was 9’ (maximum exposed height of 7.5’).
The layout of the wall was challenging since two inside corners and two outside corners had to be built to go around a utility pole. The wall was able to be built in cold winter time temperatures because no concrete or soil compaction was necessary – only placement of #57 stone. The total square footage installed was 1,923 SF.
