The West Milton Stormwater Improvement project was the rehabilitation of a stream which runs through the town under several streets and a railroad track. The SEDA-COG group received funding to rebuild the old stream banks that were a conglomeration of old failing walls of various types that no longer protected the homes, businesses and utilities from potential water erosion.
The ELA Group was very familiar with the capabilities of the MaxumStone system having done a design for a stream project before. They preferred to use the large wet-cast MaxumStone system where the potential of severe seasonal storms could cause scouring from large volumes of water rushing down the stream bed. Two full courses were embedded as required by the scour design analysis and the entire reinforced geogrid zone was backfilled using #57 stone facilitating the potential rapid draw down in flood conditions. The job started under very difficult construction conditions with melting snow inundating the site in February of 2011. Double-sided blocks were utilized for the top course as a barrier/parapet and the fence was mounted directly in the concrete filled large hollow cores of the top blocks. The walls have performed perfectly, surviving a tropical storm in the fall of 2011 which dumped over 15 inches of rain over a few days.
